The Trade Standards (Fuel Standards) (Amendment) Order 2018 will introduce lower sulphur fuel from 1January 2019. The maximum sulphur content in diesel is reduced from 500ppm to 10ppm and in unleaded petrol, from 500pmm to 50ppm.
This amendment was done in consultation with stakeholders such as fuel companies, association, Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), Consumer Council of Fiji (CCoF), Government agencies, private sector, fuel importers and other relevant stakeholders.
“The lower sulphur fuel will lead to reduced pollution, increased engine life and reduced maintenance cost in motor vehicles. The use of lower sulphur fuel would allow the period between vehicle servicing to be extended and less sulphuric acid would result in wear and tear of engines to be significantly reduced” said the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Hon. Premila Kumar.
“The importation of 500ppm fuel will only be permitted for re-export purpose. In this regard, the importer must apply for import license from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism” added the Hon. Minister.
