Mr. Speaker Sir,

I thank the Honourable Member for the question.

I rise to update the House on the progress the Ministry is making to support the growth of Fiji’s outsourcing industry, particularly in advancing global data-protection standards such as ISO 27001 to secure more business from Australia and New Zealand.

Economic Diversification and Industry Growth

Mr. Speaker Sir,

Fiji is in a period of economic diversification. To build a more resilient and future-ready economy, we are expanding beyond traditional sectors and investing in technology-driven industries. The outsourcing sector has become one of our strongest emerging industries due to our skilled English-speaking workforce, cultural compatibility with key markets, favourable time zones, and the Government’s continued investment in ICT infrastructure.

Today, the industry employs over 8,000 Fijians, generates approximately $350 million annually, and contributes more than $200 million in foreign exchange.

Importance of ISO 27001

Mr. Speaker Sir,

ISO 27001 has become essential for outsourcing companies seeking high-value clients. It provides assurance that an organisation has strong data-protection systems, proper risk management, and internationally aligned security controls. These are mandatory expectations from partners in Australia, New Zealand, and the global marketplace.

I am pleased to report that several local companies have achieved ISO 27001 certification, including Digicel, KPMG, Mindpearl, Packleader Pacific, Vodafone Fiji, Centrecom, Proficient Customer Solutions, and others. Each certification enhances Fiji’s reputation as a trusted and secure outsourcing destination.

This progress aligns directly with Fiji’s National Digital Strategy, which prioritises cybersecurity, secure digital infrastructure, and strong data governance.

Ministry and Outsource Fiji’s Support

Mr. Speaker Sir,

Through Outsource Fiji, the Ministry is implementing a comprehensive programme to uplift national information-security standards. This includes industry awareness, technical advisory services, and capacity-building delivered with support from the Market Development Facility and international certification bodies.

We are also ensuring that MSMEs are not left behind. Shared templates, model policies, and group-training opportunities are being developed so smaller businesses can meet basic security requirements in a cost-effective manner. This keeps the industry inclusive and broadens participation in high-value global supply chains.

Transition to Higher-Value Digital Jobs

Mr. Speaker Sir,

These reforms support Fiji’s shift from traditional call-centre work to higher-value digital roles such as analytics, IT support, finance operations, and knowledge-process outsourcing. These roles offer better wages, help retain young talent and build a more digitally capable workforce for the future.

International Marketing and Trade Missions

Through trade missions and international marketing, Outsource Fiji and the Ministry continue to showcase Fiji’s upgraded security standards, certified companies, time-zone alignment, and cost competitiveness. These engagements reassure clients that Fiji is a secure and reliable outsourcing hub.

Conclusion

Mr. Speaker Sir,

In closing, a secure outsourcing industry is a competitive industry. By investing in information-security reforms, building digital skills, and promoting Fiji as a trusted partner, we are laying the foundation for long-term job creation, stronger foreign-exchange earnings, and sustained economic resilience.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker Sir.
